How Modern Heat Pumps Work in Cold Climates

For decades, heat pumps were thought to be suitable only for mild climates. However, recent advancements in compressor technology and refrigerants have completely changed the game.

Cold-Climate Heat Pumps

Modern air-to-water and air-to-air heat pumps can now operate efficiently in temperatures well below freezing—some even down to -13°F (-25°C). They achieve this through variable-speed inverter compressors that can ramp up heating capacity when the temperature drops.

Integration with Radiant Heating

One of the most exciting developments is the pairing of air-to-water heat pumps with hydronic radiant floor heating. Because radiant floors require relatively low water temperatures (usually between 85°F and 115°F) to heat a space effectively, they are the perfect match for heat pumps, which operate most efficiently at those lower output temperatures.

Environmental Impact

By shifting away from fossil fuel boilers to electric heat pumps powered by an increasingly renewable grid, homeowners can drastically reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing comfort.
